RALEIGH, N.C. (October 13, 2014) – The North Carolina Building Performance Association (NCBPA) today announced the availability of an energy usage guarantee program available to builders of new homes throughout North Carolina. NCBPA sponsors the program in conjunction with Bonded Builders Warranty Group, which offers the program nationally.
The program, known as the Residential Energy GuaranteeTM, offers new home buyers financial protection from energy usage they incur that exceeds the annual estimates provided at the time of purchase. The limited guarantee is available to new homes that receive a HERS Index Score, which includes a national certification for energy efficiency and a “miles per gallon” score for the home’s anticipated energy usage.
“The energy guarantee is an excellent benefit for North Carolina homeowners seeking assurance that their new home will perform as advertised by the builder,” said Ryan Miller, Founder & Executive Director of NCBPA. “The guarantee provides assurance that, once living in the home, if energy usage turn out to be higher than expected by more than 15%, the homeowner will be eligible for reimbursement for the excess utility cost,” said Miller.
North Carolina homebuilders can purchase the guarantee when constructing new homes that meet national and state standards for energy efficiency. During the construction process, the builder hires a home energy rater to certify the home for energy efficiency and provide a HERS Index Score that estimates the home’s annual energy usage.
“We’re thrilled to offer this program to North Carolina builders,” said Karen Piacenta, National Accounts Development Manager at Bonded Builders Warranty Group, who backs the Residential Energy Guarantee.
