U.S. Homes Got Larger in 2011

Home sizes in the United States got larger last year, rising to an average of 2,480 square feet, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The finding contradicts the presumed trend toward smaller dwellings that has supposedly taken hold in recent years.

Among the other findings:

  • 87% of new homes completed last year had at least 3 bedrooms.
  • The average sales price of new single-family homes sold was $267,900. The average sales price was $272,900 in 2010, $270,900 in 2009 and $292,600 in 2008.
