    With 11 months of data reported, 2012 will clearly go down as a record year for favorable housing affordability conditions, and a great year for buyers who could get a mortgage, according to the National Association of Realtors.

    USGBC Releases 2012 List of Top 10 States for LEED

    The U.S. Green Building Council released its annual list of the top 10 states for new LEED certifications in 2012, highlighting those regions that are transforming buildings and communities across the country.

    The per-capita list is based on 2010 U.S. Census data and includes commercial and institutional buildings certified under LEED, through which approximately 2.2 billion square feet of space has been certified worldwide through 2012.

    Housing Starts Up 12.1 Percent in December

    Privately-owned housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 954,000, 12.1 percent above the revised November estimate of 851,000, and 36.9 percent above the December 2011 rate of 697,000, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

    Single-family housing starts in December were at a rate of 616,000, 8.1 percent above the revised November figure of 570,000.

    Residential Construction Remains Strong

    Private residential construction spending jumped 2.2% on a month-to-month basis during December 2012. The initial estimate of a 0.4% gain for November was moved up slightly to a 0.6% increase, but the October number was pushed appreciably higher from 1.3% to 3.2%. Spending has registered nine uninterrupted months of growth, as well as 16 of the last 17 months showing expansion.
