The program will offer a whole house energy bill guarantee to homebuilders based on the energy projections of a RESNET Home Energy Rating.

Interest Rates and Housing Affordability

According to Freddie Mac, the average interest rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by 8 basis points over the week to 4.39%. Since the beginning of the year, mortgage rates have risen by about 1 percentage point and are now at a level last seen in August 2011.

New Poll Confirms Broad Support for the Mortgage Interest Deduction

NAHB previously published economic analysis of claims made against the mortgage interest deduction. In those findings, we noted that polling typically finds popular support for the MID, including renters.  A new survey confirms the broad base of support the MID holds among the public.

Consumer Confidence Hits Highest Level in Over Five Years

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had improved in May, increased again in June. The Index now stands at 81.4, up from 74.3 in May. The Present Situation Index increased to 69.2 from 64.8. The Expectations Index improved to 89.5 from 80.6 last month.

The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market index passed the tipping point of 50 this month to top out at 52, the highest level since April 2006 and the largest monthly increase since 2002. The renewed confidence was spread across all three components, with the expectation for the next 6 months rising to 61, the highest in seven years.
