Royal Oaks Building Group Helps Build “Hero Home” for Disabled Veteran’s Family

Royal Oaks Building Group of Raleigh, N.C., honors those who serve our nation by being a proud participant in Operation: Coming Home, a volunteer project that builds and donates homes for disabled combat veterans.

Led by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County and the Triangle Real Estate and Construction Veterans, Operation: Coming Home delivered its second completed “Hero Home” located in the Fuquay-Varina neighborhood of Southern Oaks on a home site donated by developer Gaines and Co.

In 2010, USMC Sgt. Stan Roberts and his wife, Crissy Roberts, were selected to receive the 2010 “Hero Home” on behalf of Operation: Coming Home.

A member of the 2nd AAV in Camp Lejeune, N.C., Sgt. Roberts served three tours of duty in Iraq. During his last tour, he was injured by an improvised exploding device blast into his amphibious assault vehicle.

This blast resulted in the loss of Sgt. Roberts’ right leg, injuries to his right arm and traumatic brain injury.

“Celebrating this year’s ‘Hero Home’ completion and having the opportunity to once again share the excitement of the key ceremony with the Roberts family and everyone who had a part in the Operation: Coming Home initiative is a privilege,” said Rich Van Tassel, president of Royal Oaks Building Group. “We hope that the sacrifice which was made on behalf of Sgt. Roberts that is being recognized through Operation: Coming Home encourages everyone in the Triangle community to find ways to actively support and give thanks to our troops.”

Van Tassel also serves as the committee chair for Operation: Coming Home.

In addition to Royal Oaks and Gaines and Co., Operation: Coming Home is sponsored by STOCK Building Supply, the Town of Fuquay-Varina, and the Stone Builder & Developer Marketing Group.

This is the second Operation: Coming Home “Hero Home” built in the Southern Oaks community in Fuquay-Varina.

In 2008, Royal Oaks Building Group co-built and donated a home to veteran Joey Bozik, the project’s first recipient, a sergeant in the 16th Military Police Brigade based at Fort Bragg who was injured in 2004 when his Humvee hit a bomb south of Baghdad.

One of the goals of Operation: Coming Home is to raise funds for the more homes for wounded veterans. Donations may be made here.
